The Austin-Koblenz Student Exchange for high school and middle school students began in March of 1991 when a group of Koblenz students visited Austin. Those students stayed with Austin ISD students, and the following year, the Austin students returned the visit and stayed with their Koblenz friends. The exchange is open to all students in Austin and Koblenz, but is administered by Anderson High School in Austin and Görres Gymnasium in Koblenz.
Over twenty years, the exchange has continued to offer our cities’ youth the opportunities of a lifetime. In the spring of even-numbered years, Koblenz students visit Austin for three weeks, and in the summer of odd-numbered years, Austin students travel to Koblenz. The highlight of the exchange is the home stay, which not only makes the trip very affordable, but also gives students the opportunity to get to know a family in the host city on a very personal level.
Students attend school with their partners on most of the school days and spend evening and weekends with their host student. On several school days, the students’ teacher/chaperones lead them on day trips to nearby cities and attractions. Students are encouraged to learn as much about the other culture and language in school, at home with the family, and while touring with their friends.
