Austin's International Youth Conference - July 2004

Planning for Austin's International Youth Conference began the year before the Annual Sister Cities International Conference was held in Fort Worth, Texas.  The Austin-Koblenz Sister Cities leadership invited all of Austin's sister cities committees to particiate by bringing to Austin up to three students from their partner cities.  Home stays were arranged with Austin young people and their families.  The American host students and international guests spent four days in Austin working together in a variety of activities, including a day of volunteering with Habitats for Humanity.  At the same time, they learned through classroom instruction as well as interactions with each other about the cultures of the world.

The group then traveled to Fort Worth to attend the youth component of the Sister Cities International Conference.

Camp Koblenz - Summer 2006

In 2005 when Lord Mayor Dr. Eberhard Schulte-Wissermann heard that Austin was receiving evacuees from Katrina, he set about raising money to help support them.  With the help of members of the Business Delegation who had visited Austin in 2005, the City of Koblenz had soon collected the equivalent of $20,000 and sent it to the Austin-Koblenz Sister Cities Committee.  After researching the situation, the committee learned that some Children of Katrina would probably remain in Austin with their families for the foreseeable future. Their families were working hard to create a new life here in Austin, but had few resources to provide ways for their children to experience the city that was now their home.  The committee decided to find a way to help these children.

Within the next few months, the committee leadership established a partnership with Austin Parks and Recreation to create a summer camp during the summer of 2006 and named it for the city that funded it.  Camp Koblenz offered the Children of Katrina the opportunity to learn about Austin and to experience some of the activities that make Austin a wonderful place to live.
